Meneghetti Winery: landscape architecture and horticultural works in the service of a luxurious experience

Meneghetti in Bale has long been more than just a hotel and winery. It is a space that is continuously developing in dialogue with the Istrian landscape, olive groves and vineyards that form the natural framework of the entire experience.

Landscaping here is not an addition to architecture, but rather its equal layer that connects the production landscape, residential zones, and contemporary architecture into a complete spatial story.

Landscaping of the Meneghetti winery

After the construction of the wine complex buried in the terrain, the Winery environment received a new level of development. The project, which began in 2023 as a small intervention, grew into an extensive landscape project on an area of approximately 3,500 to 4,000 m² by 2025, with a total of around 4,500 planted plants.

The landscape project connects the architecture of the winery, production areas and residential areas through clearly defined plant complexes and spatial sequences, ensuring legibility, functionality and long-term sustainability of the space.

The entrance to the winery as a spatial identity

The entrance to the winery is highlighted by planting large cypress trees, which clearly mark the approach and create a representative first impression. The alley of holm oaks, shaped in a clipped form, introduces rhythm and scale and further defines the identity of the space. With this intervention, the entrance area becomes more than just a traffic zone – it becomes an experiential transition from landscape to architectural complex.

Greening of the buried object and stabilization of slope

A special challenge was the landscaping of the buried part of the building with the gazebo. In addition to the aesthetic component, it was necessary to ensure the stability of the slope and prevent soil erosion. For this purpose, coconut mesh was used as temporary protection, until the ornamental grasses and perennials took root and took on the role of permanent soil stabilization.

This approach clearly demonstrates that landscape architecture goes beyond simply planting plants and includes harmonizing structure, soil, water, and vegetation into a functional and long-lasting whole.

Landscape architecture and horticulture – inseparable processes

The Meneghetti project is a good example of the close connection between landscape architecture and horticulture in practice.

Landscape architecture defines the spatial organization, materials and infrastructure – from paths, walls and stairs to lighting and irrigation systems. Horticulture represents its living layer: the knowledge of plant species, their requirements, development and long-term maintenance.

A successful landscape project requires timely planning of all technical systems, such as electrical, water and irrigation connections, so that the vegetation layer can function optimally. The quality of the execution ultimately depends on the quality of the foundation, from the infrastructure to the selection of plant material and reliable suppliers.

Horticultural works and restaurant terrace design

The second part of the project concerns horticultural works in the restaurant terrace area, where plants in containers and jars play a key role in shaping the ambiance. Behind the seemingly simple planting lies a series of expert decisions: proper preparation of the substrate, moisture control, adding top dressing and agrogel for water retention, and careful processing of the roots before planting.

The pots here are not a decorative addition, but a tool that introduces vegetation into the living space, defines the micro-ambience, and increases the quality of use of the terrace throughout the season.

Luxury as a result of thoughtful landscaping

It is in details like these that it becomes clear why guests experience the Meneghetti space as luxurious. It is not just about the beautiful view or architecture, but about the feeling of being in a space that has been carefully designed, expertly executed, and long-term cared for. The landscape here is not a backdrop, but an active part of the experience, organically connected to the nature that surrounds it.
